The Working Woman's Autumn: When Crisp Silhouettes Do Double Duty

There’s a particular chill in the air, the kind that carries the scent of fallen leaves and the promise of cozy evenings. It’s the kind of chill that makes you want to pull on a beautifully cut jacket, something with a bit of weight and structure. And it got me thinking about the working woman’s wardrobe, especially now, as we navigate this in-between space – not quite the holidays, but definitely past Labor Day.

Because let’s be honest, the idea of a “capsule wardrobe” is mostly aspirational for most of us. Who has the time, let alone the closet space? But there’s something undeniably appealing about the idea of pieces that can shift from the office to dinner, from a school event to a gallery opening. And that’s where the beauty of a crisp silhouette comes in.

Take, for instance, the classic blazer. Not the oversized, boyfriend styles that have been popular, though those have their place. I’m talking about a blazer that fits like it was made for you. One with sharp shoulders, a nipped-in waist, and a length that hits just so on the hip. It’s a piece that instantly elevates everything from a simple turtleneck and trousers to a silk blouse and tailored pants.

I remember years ago, I was covering the collections in Milan, and it was pouring rain. I mean, the kind of rain that soaks you to the bone in seconds. I was dashing between shows, trying to keep my notes from disintegrating, when I saw her. She was impeccably dressed in a charcoal grey pantsuit, the jacket perfectly tailored, her hair pulled back in a sleek bun. But it was her demeanor that struck me. She wasn’t fazed by the downpour, not even slightly. She exuded this air of calm, of being completely in control, even amidst the chaos. It was a masterclass in the power of a well-cut jacket.

And that’s what I mean about doing double duty. It’s not just about the clothes themselves, it’s about the confidence they give you. The way a structured dress can make you feel ready to tackle a board meeting, and then, with a quick change of shoes and a swipe of lipstick, carry you through to drinks with friends.

This season, I’m particularly drawn to rich, autumnal hues – deep burgundies, forest greens, and burnt oranges. Colors that feel both sophisticated and unexpected. Think a velvet blazer in a deep emerald green, paired with black cigarette pants and a crisp white shirt. Or a midi-length skirt in a luxurious burgundy velvet, worn with a fitted cashmere sweater and ankle boots.

And let’s not forget about the power of accessories. A statement belt can cinch in a flowy dress and add a touch of polish. A silk scarf, tied at the neck or looped through a belt loop, can instantly elevate a simple sweater. And of course, a great pair of shoes is non-negotiable. Whether it’s classic pumps, sleek ankle boots, or even a pair of loafers with a modern twist, the right shoes can make all the difference.

The key is to find pieces that you feel good in, pieces that make you feel confident and ready to take on the world. Because when you feel good, you look good. And when you look good, well, you know the rest.

So embrace the crispness of autumn, the way the air feels different, the way the light shifts. And let your wardrobe reflect that same sense of purpose, of quiet confidence. Because the working woman’s autumn is a beautiful thing, full of possibility and style that works as hard as you do.
