Hailee Steinfeld. That name—paired with a red carpet image—always triggers a little flutter of anticipation in my chest. Will it be Saint Laurent? A daring Rodarte confection? Or maybe, just maybe, something unexpected? The girl takes chances. And while her acting chops are undeniable, it’s her fashion choices that really make her one to watch.
But lately, I’ve noticed something. A trend, if you will. Steinfeld, all five feet and seven inches of her, seems to be favoring a particular silhouette: short. Really short. We’re talking hemlines that flirt dangerously with the upper thigh, often paired with sky-high heels that further accentuate her long legs.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m all for a woman owning her body, and Steinfeld undoubtedly has the legs for it. But I can’t help but wonder: is this a deliberate style choice, or is she playing into some unspoken Hollywood rule that dictates shorter women should embrace the mini?
I remember a time, not so long ago, when the fashion world seemed obsessed with height. Amazonian gazelles ruled the runways, their limbs stretching for days. Designers draped and cut with these ethereal creatures in mind, leaving us mere mortals to fend for ourselves. Finding pants that didn’t bunch at the ankle? A dress that didn’t drown my frame? It was a constant struggle.
And then there was the issue of heels. Don’t even get me started on heels. I once spent an agonizing evening perched atop a pair of stilettos that felt more like medieval torture devices than footwear. All in the name of fashion, of course. Or was it insecurity? A desire to measure up, quite literally, to some arbitrary standard?
But something’s shifted. Maybe it’s the rise of street style, with its emphasis on individuality and personal expression. Maybe it’s the growing awareness that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Whatever the reason, I’m seeing more and more women embracing their height, or lack thereof, with a refreshing sense of confidence.
Take petite powerhouse Reese Witherspoon, for example. She’s never shied away from a good knee-length dress, often opting for A-line silhouettes that flatter her figure without overwhelming it. And then there’s the always-chic Sarah Jessica Parker, who, despite her statuesque frame, isn’t afraid to rock a pair of flats on the red carpet. Gasp!
So, where does that leave Steinfeld and her parade of minis? Is she simply showcasing her enviable legs, or is she sending a message to all the vertically challenged women out there: "Embrace your height, but don’t be afraid to show a little leg"?
Perhaps it’s a bit of both. And maybe that’s okay. Fashion, after all, is about experimentation, about pushing boundaries and challenging norms. As long as Steinfeld continues to own her choices, to radiate that infectious confidence that’s become her trademark, I say, "Work it, girl." Just maybe pack a pair of flats for the after-party.
