The internet, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that Hailey Bieber possesses some sort of arcane knowledge when it comes to skincare. Her skin, perpetually dewy and seemingly lit from within, has launched a thousand YouTube tutorials and Reddit threads, all dedicated to deciphering the secrets behind her “glazed donut” glow.


Now, I’m not one to buy into celebrity hype easily. I’ve seen enough airbrushing and cleverly placed lighting in my time to last a lifetime. But there’s something about Bieber's approach that feels… different. Less contrived, perhaps. More like an earnest, if slightly obsessive, dedication to the ritual of skincare.


Her brand, Rhode, certainly leans into this image. Minimalist packaging, pronouncements about “skinimalism,” and a carefully curated product line that screams “effortless” while simultaneously implying a rigorous routine. It's a clever marketing strategy, no doubt. But is there any substance to it?


Let’s start with the infamous “glazed donut” look. The term itself is enough to make one’s teeth ache, but the underlying principle is sound. Hydrated, plump skin reflects light better, creating that coveted dewy finish. Bieber herself has shared snippets of her routine, emphasizing hydration above all else. Think layers of hyaluronic acid serums, rich moisturizers, and – the pièce de résistance – a generous slathering of an occlusive like Vaseline or Aquaphor to seal it all in.


This, I can get behind. I remember a time, long before the advent of “glass skin” and “cloudless skin,” when a good old-fashioned moisturizer was all one needed. A time when skincare routines were more about common sense than complicated steps and even more complicated ingredients lists.


But Bieber's approach, while seemingly simple, isn’t exactly low-maintenance. It requires a certain level of dedication, not to mention a carefully curated arsenal of products. And this is where things get murky.

The “Rhode Skin” website, a study in millennial pink and sans-serif fonts, offers a glimpse into Bieber’s product philosophy. Clean, minimalist, and focused on a handful of “essential” products. The cynic in me can’t help but wonder if this minimalist approach is more about aesthetics than efficacy. After all, a streamlined product line makes for a much more cohesive Instagram feed.


And then there’s the question of access. Bieber’s own brand might be positioned as relatively affordable, but her off-camera routine reportedly includes pricier options from brands like Augustinus Bader and Biba de Sousa. It’s a familiar story – celebrities touting the benefits of a “simple” routine while benefiting from a lifestyle that allows for expensive facials and dermatologist-prescribed products.


So, where does that leave us, the mere mortals yearning for Bieber-esque skin? Perhaps the real takeaway here isn’t about replicating her exact routine, but rather adopting a more mindful approach to skincare. Focusing on hydration, finding products that work for our individual skin types, and yes, maybe even embracing a little bit of shine.


The “glazed donut” look might not be for everyone, and frankly, the thought of slathering my face in petroleum jelly before bed fills me with a mild sense of horror. But there’s something to be said for Bieber’s unapologetic embrace of dewy, healthy-looking skin. In a world obsessed with concealing and correcting, it’s refreshing, even inspiring, to see someone celebrate the natural texture and luminosity of skin.


Whether or not her methods are the key to achieving such skin is debatable. But one thing’s for sure – Hailey Bieber has certainly gotten us talking about skincare again. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the point.
